Green Seal® encourages companies to build products that can improve the sustainability of the world. The organization is involved in almost every industry and has developed requirements for over 500 different products. For a window to receive this designation, it must meet certain qualifications.
Glazed windows should have U-value that’s not greater than 0.36. Heat transfer coefficient measures the temperature difference between the outdoor and indoor temperature of a product. It’s how much heat gets into your home from your window.
Product frames and sash can’t contain heavy metals like lead, cadmium, arsenic, mercury or hexavalent chromium. Aluminum parts that are treated for anti-corrosivity with organic conversion coatings with chromate are an exemption.
Product Specific Requirements
The ratio of the window’s visible light transmission coefficient (VLTC) over its solar heat gain coefficient (SHGC) should be at least 1. SHGC refers to the amount of solar energy that can be transmitted through a product. VLTC is the amount of light that enters your indoor space through the window’s glazing.
